Functional Capacity Evaluation

The service of functional capacity evaluation involves the assessment of an individual’s capacity to perform their occupation and/or any suitable alternative position. This requires the complete evaluation of function with specific reference to the individual’s ability to meet the physical, cognitive, psychological and behavioural demands of their job.

A functional capacity evaluation includes objective and standardised assessment measures to establish a person’s overall capacity, and entails a consultation of three to four hours. The findings are compiled in a comprehensive report. The purpose of such an in-depth assessment is to identify the extent of a person’s temporary or permanent disability, and the potential for employment within the open labour market. This includes consideration of the person’s prognosis for improved function and work capacity, and also explores reasonable accommodations within the work environment and non-essential job demands to facilitate sustainable engagement in work tasks.

Work Assessment Services | Donné Nel Occupational Therapy | Mind Body Function

Work Assessment

A work assessment is recommended in cases where a full functional capacity evaluation is not indicated, specifically if there has been a request by the employer or Occupational Health Practitioner regarding an employee’s capacity to perform a specific work function.

Work assessment focuses on identifying a person’s capacity to return to their own occupation, and provides specific recommendations for reasonable job accommodations within the workplace. This would be negotiated with the employer, and may include the facilitation of a graded return to work, environmental adaptations or providing advice to the employer on a suitable alternative position on a temporary or permanent basis. Work assessment is likely to accompany return-to-work intervention, and is a specialised Occupational Therapy service that addresses intrinsic and extrinsic factors for optimal job performance.

Return-to-work Intervention and Case Management

Return to work after illness and/or injury can be complicated by internal and external barriers, including the employee’s physical and psychological condition, employer attitudes and stigma, specific job demands and the structures within the environment.

Return-to-work intervention and case management aim to facilitate re-integration into the workplace through strategies that address the person, environment and occupation. This may include individual sessions with the employee with the aim of improving work capacity, site visits with the employer to negotiate job accommodations, assessments of the work environment and specific job tasks, and formulating a suitable return-to-work plan.

Work Visits and Ergonomic Assessments Services | Donné Nel Occupational Therapy | Mind Body Function

Work Visits and Ergonomic Assessments

The work environment can significantly influence an employee’s ability to perform their chosen occupation, especially after illness and/or injury. A work site visit is a service which investigates barriers for safe return to work, and this includes the physical environment, attitudes of managers and co-workers, specific non-inherent job demands and other contextual factors. This is a useful tool for improving the success of re-integration within the workplace, and is considered an important aspect of return-to-work intervention.

Ergonomic assessments and adaptations address physical, cognitive, sensory and behavioural factors within the work environment and specified occupation to improve the employee’s work performance.
